Mayoral Leadership

The VLGA’s Mayoral Leadership Program (MLP), held annually, provides mayors and deputy mayors with targeted knowledge to fulfil their roles with a high degree of competency.

The program, first launched in December 2024, includes content which directly aligns with the mandatory professional development requirements introduced by the Victorian Government in late 2024. The timing of the program in late November/early December each year also fulfills the requirement by the Victorian Government for mayors and deputy mayors to complete this training within one month of election to the role.

Building on existing skills and experience, the program presents an opportunity for mayors and deputy mayors from across Victoria to foster connections and establish support networks at the beginning of their term.

The VLGA MLP will best prepare mayors and deputy mayors to lead effectively throughout their term, looking at the role and relationships and the leadership skills required to support good governance.

MLP is an interactive learning experience, where participants can not only learn from our highly credentialed facilitators but also learn from each other.

The program for 2026 will be held on Friday, 4 December.
