The Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) has launched a new Coaching and Mentoring program to support councillors throughout the duration of their council term.
This program is in addition to our Councillor Professional Development Program.
Feedback received from councillors through our 2024 and 2025 VLGA Victorian Councillor Census, indicated they were seeking additional external support and advice, particularly when navigating some of the more complex issues councillors are facing.
The demands and responsibilities of a councillor are now equivalent to those of a full-time role. Our Census showed 73% of councillors who responded are working full time, part-time or running their own business, in addition to fulfilling their role as an elected representative.
Some councillors told us they would benefit from longer-term guidance so they could achieve their personal and professional goals as a councillor, and others were seeking additional support to manage an issue or difficult situation they were facing.
The VLGA has assembled a Faculty of Coaches and Mentors from a variety of backgrounds and diverse lived experience. Some are well seasoned local government professionals and former
councillors, while others bring a fresh perspective to the local government landscape.
Panel members are based in Victoria (including regional Victoria), South Australia and New South Wales.
