This week marks 30 year since the return of elected councils in Victoria – a significant win for local democracy and a testament to the VLGA’s commitment to ensuring elected councils were returned in Victoria in March 1996.
The VLGA was formed in 1994, off the back of forced council amalgamations by the former Kennett State Government.
VLGA CEO Kathryn Arndt said for more than 30 years the VLGA has been a representative voice for its members, as well as a key provider of training and professional skills development to enhance councillor capabilities and ensure elected representatives are well equipped to represent their communities.
“Since it was founded, the VLGA has established itself as the only organisation with a singular focus on supporting councillors and the people who work with them to change culture, improve conduct and demonstrate good local governance,” Ms Arndt.
“We provide practical support, professional development, and policy guidance to councils, inspiring and enabling good governance and supporting elected representatives across their journey from candidacy to end-of-term.
“30 years on, the founding principles of the VLGA remain – an unwavering commitment to upholding the values of local democracy, leadership development and the good governance requirements of local representatives.”
