The VLGA is pleased to advise that following our Submission to the 2025 Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal in relation to the proposed Determination on the annual adjustments to the values of the allowancesset for Mayors, Deputy Mayors and Councillors (Victoria)– and in particular the recommendation we made that a comprehensive determination on local government allowances for mayors, deputy mayors and councillors be undertaken as a matter of priority, the VIRT has advised that they will be undertaking a Comprehensive Determination in 2026.
The Determination will include a comprehensive review of the existing allowances (including the remote area travel allowance) and allowance categories, taking into account allowances for councillors in other jurisdictions and allowances for people elected to voluntary part-time community bodies.
In accordance with the requirements of the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal and Improving Parliamentary Standards Act 2019 (Vic), the Tribunal must make its determination by 19 August 2026.
The Tribunal will be inviting written or oral submissions from all interested stakeholders by 5pm on Thursday 2 April 2026. Anyone wishing to make an oral submission must advise the Tribunal Secretariat via email by 5pm on Friday 20 March 2026.
The Tribunal has also advised the VLGA it will be undertaking broader consultation with the local government sector, including inviting councillors to complete an anonymous online questionnaire and through roundtable discussions.
