DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special members only workshop for councillors as we discuss current issues and provide strategies and tools to help councillors perform at their best.\n\nThe VLGA is offering our valued members the opportunity to join us for our series of complimentary workshops as part of our commitment to provide ongoing programs for our member councillors to continue to grow and develop their skills. \nThese workshops will provide an interactive and confidential forum to learn from and ask questions of those who are leaders in their fields. \nThis session will provide practical tips and tools for councillors to navigate a successful CEO performance review. The discussion will look at setting key performance indicators which align with the organisation’s strategic objectives\, providing constructive feedback and negotiating contracts and remuneration. \nLeading this discussion will be local government leader Jenny Scicluna and Dawn Bray\, VLGA Head of Programs & Policy. \nPlease note that these sessions are designed to be interactive and confidential and will not be recorded. Chatham House rules apply. There will be the opportunity for you to ask questions and receive feedback on any situations you may have found challenging. Lunch and Learn workshops are free for VLGA Members.

DESCRIPTION:This social and professional network for young councillors\, provides participants with the organisational and peer-based support they need to thrive in complex council environments.\n\n \nThrough supporting this generation of young councillors\, we can encourage new generations of young people to run for local government in the future. \nThis group is a forum for ideas and action\, driven by member councillors. As the support infrastructure behind this group\, the VLGA will assist in the facilitation of professional development\, as well as create networking opportunities where councillors can share ideas\, challenges and opportunities and work together to achieve successful outcomes for the community’s they represent. SUMMARY:FastTrack 2026 - Incivility: A Threat to Local Democracy
DESCRIPTION:The VLGA is the only organisation nationally with a singular focus on supporting councillors and the people who work with them to strengthen culture\, improve conduct and demonstrate good local governance. \nThis national one-day annual conference will bring together stakeholders from across the local government sector to examine the rise of incivility in public discourse and its impact on democratic processes. \nThe event will explore how hostile behaviour\, misinformation\, and the erosion of respectful dialogue threatens the effectiveness\, safety\, and integrity of local governance.\nParticipants will examine the causes of incivility\, its consequences for elected representatives\, council staff and civic engagement\, and examine practical strategies for fostering respectful communication and resilience in the face of hostility.\nAttendees will leave equipped with tools to strengthen public trust\, promote constructive dialogue\, and protect the democratic values that underpin local government as a healthy\, functioning democracy.\nThe program also directly aligns with components of the state government’s Year 2 mandatory training requirements for Victorian councillors including: \n\nCreating and maintaining a safe workplace\nRenewing Councillor group commitment to work as a team\n\n  \nProgram Overview\nPanel Session 1 – The Cost of Incivility: Impact on Councillors\, Staff\, and Community Trust
